I just had a chance to read your blog and am shivering in my very large and clumsy boots. If you write as well as I do and paint soooooo much better what the heck am I doing? Never mind, I will try to get by for your reception although I am working at the Museum and will have to risk my own and other lives driving across town at sunset, but one must sacrifice for Great Art. I will miss that chicken...

Yvonne and I stopped by the library today and were very impressed with your new work. We really liked, well everything, but most notably the moth, emu and rabbit. You work should be shown to all of the people who paint animals. People seem to think that "it looks like a photograph" is a compliment. It isn't. To make something look as it exists is to be a copyist, a technical achievement but not a creative endeavor.
You have taken the image you see of the animal and have filtered and distilled and extruded the essence of that image into a work of art. You have created. You have made art.

To open the BAAA to all artists regardless of skill or subject, medium or method is a goal each artist should embrace, those who are BAAA members and those who are not. Art is of itself an all inclusive expression of passion and sight and should only find limits in the few, short years an artist has to work at their craft. I salute your crusade and will always support you and your efforst

Mike, thank you for sharing your experiences. In answer to your question regarding TV/newspapers, I know that there hasn't been anything on TV so far (maybe on the radio but I'm not 100% positive on that one) and that the info provided to the newspaper has been hit-and-miss. When the info has been in the paper, it perhaps understandably mentioned only the venues and a few artists' names...nothing about the music/entertainment...nothing about the culinary goodies...etc. I think if more people knew about the *extras* it would help. I am happy to hear that the response you received at Second Street Gallery in Bandon was a good one. In the spirit of artistic debate (and because I'm one of those displaying, not creating-except for in the studio, artists), I'm not necessarily sold on the idea that an artist creating versus displaying is what brings people in...on the other hand, nice weather and tourists strolling about in Old Town certainly does. How would the same scenario play out in February, when the rain is coming down sideways, and Bandon looks like a veritable ghost town? I think the success of the Coos Bay-North Bend Art Walk will require continuous fine tuning, much like a recipe...a bit of this and a bit of that...and at some point you hope to come out with the best d*** chocolate chip cookies ever made. :) *BTW, I haven't gotten to that point with my chocolate chip cookies...still a work in progress.*

I agree with the idea that this is a fairly new venue and the word just has not gotten out about it to the general public and artists in particular. Has the local newspapers or TV given any publicity to this event at the mall? I really don't have any ideas on how to speed up recognition process. All I know is that I got great response today while demonstrating painting at a gallery in town. Maybe we need more artist who are willing to not just display their art but to also share the creative process.
